HARRISBURG, Pa. – (September 16, 2021) McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC is pleased to announce the addition of David Burnett to its Harrisburg office, where he will work with the Healthcare and Corporate & Tax Practice Groups.
Burnett weds his legal knowledge and expertise with his medical background as a frontline COVID-19 registered nurse. His practice focuses on counseling clients — including in-patient hospital facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, solo and concierge medicine practitioners, physician’s groups and other healthcare institutions — on a vast array of legal issues, from regulatory compliance, transactional matters, mergers and acquisitions and risk management to more general issues, such as contracts, affiliations, reorganizations and governance.
He also has familiarity with federal issues, including Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines and compliance, Stark and Anti-Kickback statutes as well as compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), among other state and local statutory and corporate compliance issues.
“After spending so much time caring and advocating for patients at the medical level, it’s gratifying to begin serving and advocating for the hospitals and practitioners that make that care possible,” Burnett said. “There’s so much unseen work that goes into regulatory and statutory compliance. Helping lift that burden for healthcare workers so they can focus on their mission to heal people and save lives means everybody wins.”
Before entering the legal field, Burnett worked in the intensive care unit environment, accumulating six years of critical care experience at hospitals in six states, including Johns Hopkins University and the Cleveland Clinic. He worked across surgical, burn, medicine, neurological and cardiac services and has a strong background in bedside healthcare delivery protocols nationwide.
Burnett earned his Juris Doctorate, as well as a certificate in health law, from the University of Akron School of Law, where he served as vice president of the Health Law Society. He also worked for an Ohio-based health law firm, assisting with legal research projects, case briefings, contract agreements, regulatory update summaries, bylaw review, legislative research, and summary and database compilation.
