David practices in the Intellectual Property Group and Patent Division as well as the Litigation Group and White Collar Defense division in the Columbus, Ohio office. Although originally trained as a chemist, David also has a particular interest in design patent applications.

What does David do for Clients?
David brings a broad scientific background in the chemical field, including experience in catalysis, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry to bear on his clients’ behalf in the patent arena. His clients range from Fortune 50 corporations with vast patent experience to first time inventors trying to make their dreams come true while learning on their feet. Not content to stay in his lane, ever fearful of an intellectual rut, and out of sheer love of a good argument, David has also branched out into white collar defense, litigation, and even a few criminal defense matters. While the topics may be different, David applies keen analytical skills and creative problem solving to both patent and litigation practice.

On the patent side, David prepares and prosecutes U.S. and foreign patent applications for a variety of technologies as well as design patent applications, and is a member of the Intellectual Property Litigation Team, assisting clients with asserting and defending patent and trademark claims in federal court. David also prepares legal opinions including freedom-to-operate opinions as well as patent non-infringement and invalidity opinions.

On the litigation side, David analyzes complaints, structures defense strategies, prepares pleadings and motions, negotiates with opposing counsel, examines discovery materials, and prepares witnesses for trial.

David’s graduate research focused on methanol-to-olefin zeolite catalysis, using advanced plug-flow micro-reactor, spectrographic and chromatographic techniques, including GC/MS/FID, x-ray powder diffraction, and isotopic labeling analysis. David’s doctoral work culminated in his dissertation: “Toward a Better Understanding of the Interactions of Zeolite and Zeotype Acid Catalysts with Selected Hydrocarbons and Oxygen-Containing Compounds”. In addition to his doctoral work, David has held two post-doctoral research appointments: first at the University of Southern California from 2005 to 2006, and second at ExxonMobil Chemical from 2006 to 2007.

David has published extensively in the scientific literature, including co-authoring peer-reviewed articles published in Angewandte Chemie, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemistry-A European Journal, The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, Journal of Catalysis, Langmuir, and Accounts of Chemical Research.

How does David spend his free time?
With two young children, David no longer remembers what the concept of “free time” refers to, but when not building Magnetiles or reading books with his kids, David can usually be found in the kitchen cooking for his family, reading, playing board games, practicing Aikido (Second Degree Black Belt), going to the theater, and most especially traveling to far off vistas.
